God's Word is Good for You and Me (2 Timothy 3:16-17)

Last week: Eat breakfast AND eat more than
Breakfast. Jesus told Satan to his face: “Man
shall not live by bread alone, but by every word
that proceeds from the mouth of God.”(Matthew 4:3,
Deuteronomy 8:3)
God’s Word the Bible IS practical even for those
of us living in the 21st Century.
Today’s Bible verse:
The Bible on how to live—“training in righteousness.”
But what is rebuking and correcting?
Before we do:
Remember, the writer of this letter, the Apostle Paul,
all the Apostles, and all of their churches—none of them
had a Bible. You have a Bible! You can have a Bible YOUR WAY.
There IS a Bible for Dummies book.
Read the Bible because it is good for you—just like breakfast.
The Bible is good for correction and reproof.
They didn’t have a Bible. What they did have were people
who had walked and talked with Jesus.
And once they had gone off on mission or died, what did they
have: the Apostles’ teaching.
Acts 2:42: They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching
and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
Soon after that, there arose “false teachings” and “false teachers.”
those who “speak evil”: mention 5X
blasphemers.: 9X
There are those who speak deceptive words. (2 Peter 2:3)
The Apostle Paul himself will have to deal with
(2 Corinthians 11:13) “false apostles, deceitful workers,
[those] masquerading as apostles of Christ.”
Other terms: “false doctrine”, a “spirit of falsehood”,
while another Apostle mentions a deceiving spirit and
even teachings that come from demons?!?! 1 Timothy 4:1
The Bible speaks of false knowledge (1 Timothy 6:20)
and demonic teaching (James 3:15).
WE have a PRESCRIPTION for those troubles of
false knowledge and demonic teaching. We have in our hands
our own Bible in our very own language.
The Bible often will serve as its OWN corrective.
Don’t read the Bible once and think,
“I got this” “I understand”. . .
Rebuking and correcting.. .
this verse is the only verse in the entire Bible that
contains these two words.
Scripture is profitable for instruction—yes, of course, AND
instruction in many areas.
Rebuke or reproof: Pastor likes the words “provide
Refutation” or “to discredit” or “to dissuade” or “to disabuse.”
The Bible will correct itself—not because the Bible is wrong
but because not every book of the Bible can provide all the
teachings of the Bible—it takes the whole Bible.
Example. . .the Prosperity Gospel or the Success Gospel:
Those who follow this have forgotten Jeremiah, Jonah and Job.
Sin doesn’t make all people sick, so if you are sick it probably
isn’t because you’ve done something wrong (This is a VERY
Old idea: John 9, John 9:2.)
The Bible contains within its many books a balance to one
sided views.
“Correction”: this is a unique word and carries with it a sense
of restoration restoring a believer to the true faith, restoring
a person to the Apostle’s teaching. . .restoring a person
to the church of Jesus Christ. (See Revelation 2:4, 2:10).
Could we talk about Jerry Falwell Jr. ?
See 3 John, Colossians 4:5, 1 Thessalonians 4:12,
Philippians 1:27. Amen.
