October 14, 2018 Pastor Appreciation Month
Philippians 1:1-6 (p. 1161 / p. 1178)
Pastor Appreciation Month is about all Pastors.
See 1 Timothy 5:17. . . ELDERS. . .DCC used
to have more Elders. . .all worthy.
All Apostolic era Pastors were not trained.
Look at reforms of the reformer, Martin Luther.
Society when Luther was born was a ladder with
three steps or rungs:
Peasants (bottom)
Nobility (middle)
Clergy (top) (and closer to God?)
Martin Luther questioned the whole ladder.
Luther had ideas so radical that wars were
fought over them. Luther believed Philippians 1.
Fast forward to the 20th and 21st Centuries.
Many still see the clergy as somehow closer to God.
Some Protestant churches encourage such teaching.
The historically Christian Churches (DCC )
insistent that The Holy Spirit is upon all of us!
See Acts 10:44, Romans 15:13,
1 Corinthians 12:4 ff., Philippians 2:2.
See also Joel 2:28-29 quoted in Acts 2.
The early church was a radical movement
—the equality of the Holy Spirit.
A major feature of the Reformation which
Luther launched was a complete reversal of
existing ideas about ordinary work.
Luther insisted that, in order to be holy,
in order to live a life which is fully pleasing to
God, in order to be fully obedient to God,
it is not necessary to become a monk or a nun,
or to be continually doing so-called 'religious'
activities.
“ .. a good work when a man works at his trade,
. . .does all kinds of works for the nourishment . . .
or for the common welfare, and
... God is well pleased with them” -- Martin Luther.
Luther is reflecting the Apostle’s words
Colossians 3:23, Romans 14:22
1 Corinthians 10:31, Colossians 3:17
Amen.
