The Relationship with the Holy Spirit
Spiritual reality! Spiritual reality IS real.
All earthly life has within it an expiration date.
We must all die. (Ecclesiastes 3:2)
But God has made us more than creatures that live
and die. We are made with body AND spirit.
Jesus came to give us new life. (John 3:16, John 11:25)
The atheist’s book: denial of spiritual life.
But you and Pastor KNOW spiritual reality.
You and Pastor have had spiritual experiences.
So did author, John Newton, who wrote, “Amazing Grace.”
The Apostle Paul was also a man of spiritual experiences.
(Even before Paul’s experience on the road to Damascus.
Acts 9:3-5, Galatians 1:12, 15-17))
“Those who have eyes LET THEM SEE.”
[See Matthew 13:16ff, Luke 10:23 ff.;
Jesus asks the disciples in Mark 8:18.]
Paul’s experience: 1 Corinthians 11:23, 2 Corinthians 12:2
Paul is spiritual but no impressive (2 Corinthians 10:10 ).
Wisdom is HUMBLE, not boastful: James 3:13.
If a Pastor or any church member says: I have the Holy Spirit.
Your response is: so has everyone in the congregation.
L: I have the Holy Spirit.
P: So has everyone in the congregation.
Spirit must have a body; yours.
And Jesus’ body is the church in which the Holy Spirit dwells.
John 3:8; the Holy Spirit is not rational.
A relationship with the Holy Spirit is most important.
And Americans are not good at relationships,
generally speaking.
John Wesley: “the heart strangely warmed.”
We are called to live and walk (Romans 8:4)and be sanctified
by the Holy Spirit and renewed in the Holy Spirit (Titus 3:5).
Word pictures to describe the Holy Spirit: dove, wind, fire,
seal.
The Holy Spirit “works” in more than one way:
--a good gift (Luke 11:13)
--a teacher (John 14:26)
--a reminder (John 14:26)
--counselor/ helper (John 14:26)
--comfort/encouragement (Acts 9:31)
--a revealer/ revelation (Ephesians 3:5)
--it renews (Titus 3:5)
--it sanctifies/is sanctifying (Romans 15:16)
--it directs/leads/moves (Luke2:27, Luke 4:1)
--it speaks (Mark 13:11, Luke 1:67)
Max Lucado, “Help is Here” A relationship with
the Holy Spirit is like a marriage.
The Lord’s Holy Spirit is wanting to be in touch
with you in many ways. Develop a “sensitivity”
to the Holy Spirit.
Pastor Bob Beltz: “Becoming a Man of the Spirit”.
“The Holy Spirit relationship allows Jesus’ Spirit
within us to be the DOMINANT influence in the
believer’s life. See Galatians 5:17.
Remember:
L: I have the Holy Spirit.
P: So has everyone in the congregation.
Amen.
