Whom do you seek? (1 Timothy 1:3-7)

October 24, 2021 1 Timothy 1:3-7
Pastor’s leave taking (retirement; July 1, 2024)
Prepare for it—best thing a church can do;
Next; Pastoral Succession That Works (2nd Ed.)
by William Vanderbloemen and Warren Bird.
Jesus prepared the disciples for his leave taking
TWICE; crucifixion and ascension.
Do not replace Pastor McManus.
Find, call/hire, and retain the next Lead Pastor for
DCC. No one can replace anyone; the Lord God has made us all unique.
Warning: (from last week) Don’t hire a celebrity
pastor. Pastor McManus; not a celebrity. We celebrate 60,000 sermon downloads (now, 67,000+) from DCC’s website; a .org website.
Pastor Joel Osteen has his own personal .com website (for commercial purposes. Osteen’s church has a .com website.

Our Lord Jesus’ call to us was for us to pray for leadership (Mathew 9:37-38).
DCC can start praying now for the next Lead Pastor for DCC. Today: be careful what you pray for.
Many folks have an image of the perfect Pastor in mind. Problem: perfect Pastors do not exist (this side of Heaven).
What does your idea of the ideal Pastor look like?
--a knight in shining armor? Is that reference too old?
There is a down side to having a Knight in Shining Armor Pastor.
Would you rather look for the man/Pastor on the white horse? This image is a part of the American mind, produced by the entertainment industry; film and television (almost for 100 years).
Many can name the white horses they have seen.
It would be easy for anyone to picture a hero figure on a white horse coming to DCC rescue. That, even though horse culture is long gone.
And there is a downside to a Pastor on a white horse. It really only happens in a movie or television program.
If a Pastor on a white horse rides up to DCC in
answer to your prayers, make sure you have a lot of
good interview questions ready.
Would King Midas make a good Pastor?
Everyone knows the downside to King Midas.
Perhaps someone has Superman in mind to be
an excellent Pastor? Hire/call Pastor Superman?
What about Clark Kent?
What has all this to do with God’s Word? Plenty.
The first churches had leadership problems.
Super Apostles or troublemakers/ agitators?
In 1 Timothy, we read of more leadership problems
in Jesus’ churches, 1 Timothy 1:3-7.
[See vs 5 especially, then vss. 19 and 20.]
Two teachers Hymenaeus and Alexander. . .
[Then see 1 Timothy 4:10-13.]
Next Pastor; a King Midas? a hero? a crimefighter?
a Super Apostle? Superman?
Remember the first heroes of the church, the Apostles.
[See Mark 14:50, Mark 16:7, Matthew 28:10, Luke 24:36-38.] Amen.
