Blessed Are the Humble (Matthew 5:5)

February 17, 2021 Ash Wednesday
Matthew 5:5: Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
Although we are a Protestant congregation, we have found the Ash Wednesday worship service to be beneficial and praiseworthy. Matthew 5:5: "Blessed are the meek."
Blessed are the humble. Have you been humbled.
Sickness often humbles us.
A wild horse is of little value to the farmer. A gentle horse--a meek horse can obey the rider or driver. The meek horse is still a horse--strong and able.
Ash Wednesday is supposed to be a humbling experience. In the Bible, many
are humbled by their sin; 2 Chronicles 7:14.
King Ahab was humbled by his sin (I Kings 21:27-29).
The follower of Jesus knows that his sin is forgiven.
Does the follower of Jesus know what they did so that Jesus had to go to the cross?
We don’t practice confession much in the Protestant Church.
God’s Word encourages confessions directly to the Lord AND to one another
(James 5:16, 1 John 1:9, 2 Corinthians 7:10).
The ashes we wear remind us that we often want things other than what God wants
for us. 1 John 1:9:" If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." Amen
