John 13:34-35
Saint Valentine’s Day—should be the easiest sermon to preach!
Saint Valentine, whichever one he was, was a martyr for Jesus.
His name was associated with love.
Shouldn’t all Jesus’ followers be remembered for love?
(John 13:35)
Some thirty other New Testament Bible verses say the same thing.
(See John 14:15, Galatians 5:14 and many more.)
Let us not hear about love and go home.
Today, let’s get closer to being remembered because we loved
and that we loved because of Jesus.
Know Jesus. Know love.
Many have claimed to know Jesus and know little of love.
Even a few great leaders in the faith.
The Bible, too, shows people failing in love.
(Genesis 3 and Genesis 4)
[In Evolution, scientists aren’t sure that all the
sub-humans and proto humans lived in peace.
Why do we have a “Black Lives Matter” movement?
Why can’t we have an “All Lives Matter”?
We haven’t demonstrated that we believe that all lives matter.
All lives matter to God. (See Matthew 10:29, Matthew 10:31,
Luke 12:7.)
We do not meditate on these words of Jesus in John 13:34-35.
Are you certain of Jesus’ love for you? If so, wonderful.
God loves you more than you love yourself.
God also loves your loved ones MORE than you do.
God loves other people—the ones we don’t care for. . .
. .even our enemies, certainly and truly loves
more than we do. (Luke 6:35)
These folks—even our enemies-- require our attention
IF we claim to be followers of Jesus.
Here is where serious steps toward loving are made.
1. Pray for them.
2. Pray that the Lord show you a way to demonstrate
goodness toward that person. Have the Lord show you an
opportunity for a loving action.
(If needed, pray for the strength to carry out that loving action.)
Why would we do any of this?
1. Jesus loves that other person that much.
2. Jesus loves you that much.
God’ s love in Jesus is a gift that keeps giving THROUGH you to others.
(See 1 Corinthians 13.)
Have a blessed and loving Saint Valentine’s Day. Amen.
