August 18, 2019 Philippians 1:1-11
August 12 was the anniversary of the death of a
protester in Charlottesville, Virginia (2017).
American law recognizes crimes that qualify as hate crimes.
There are organizations in the U.S. known as hate groups.
The K.K.K. may be the oldest hate group in the U.S.
The hate often is not rational. [Stanley Majors].
And not all shootings are hate related.
Let’s not miss the obvious: no one is born hating anyone.
That means that hate is something we learn.
Anything that is learned can be unlearned.
There are degrees of hate.
The Bible allowed for crimes of passion—those who in the moment of emotion kill or kill without intention. Numbers 35:6, 11, Deuteronomy 19:1-7
--it would mean banishment, disinheritance,
estrangement from family and friends—but alive.
Since we are human, a change of heart is a real possibility.
See Jeremiah 29:13, Matthew 9:9, 1 Timothy 4:6,
1 Peter 2:21, Luke 8:35, Isaiah 61:1.
When people hate in English is different than God
hating in Hebrew.
Philippians 1:1-11: abound in love.
But things were not perfect in the churches of Philippi. (3:2, 4:2)
Paul wants unity in this church—be of the same mind in the Lord.
The Apostle PLEADS with them. . .
