The A.C.T.S. of Prayer
Each of the letters in this acrostic stands
for one of the key elements of prayer:
(A) Adoration (C) Confession (T) Thanksgiving
(S) Supplication
These are the elements AND the priority.
(R.C. Sproul on the ACTS of Prayer)
Adoration! There are a number of names and
attributes for our God. Find them and use them.
As creatures of habit, it is good to be reminded
of parts of our God we might not attend to.
See 1 John 1:5-9
In supplication, sometimes Christians will have trouble
being HONEST with God/the Lord.
And since we might even have trouble saying what we
want, HOW MUCH MORE trouble shall we have with
what we have done wrong—CONFESSION?!
See 1 John 2:15-17.
Isaiah 31:1 taught Pastor.
The Imposition of Ashes (Isaiah 1:18)
THANKSGIVING
Matthew records Jesus praying prior to eating:
the feeding of thousands, in chapters 14 and
another in 15 (Matthew 14:19, Matthew 15:36).
See also Matthew 26:26-7.
These prayers were prayers of thanksgiving and
they were traditional prayers—prayers for the Passover.
Jesus was also instructing the disciples and would tell
them mysterious things. (Matthew 26:28-29)
SUPPLICATION:
the action of asking or begging for something
earnestly or humbly.
Here are some similar words (synonyms):
entreaty, plea, appeal, petition, urge,
request, application; beseeching, begging, pleading.
In the Lord’s prayer is one supplication.
(Matthew 6:11, Luke 11:3)
Proverbs 30:7-9 recites a prayer.
Jesus instructs us to ask, seek, knock.
(Matthew 7:7-8)
Peter seemed to ask a selfish question
about repayment in heaven. Jesus simply answered
the question. (Matthew 19:27, Mark 10:28)
James and John asked a question too
(Matthew 20:22, Mark 10:38)
Jesus Himself will prayed prior to important events
(Matthew 26:39, Mark 1:35, Luke 6:12-13, Luke 22:32)
The disciples and the church will devote themselves
to prayer (Acts 2:42).
It is time for YOU to pray your supplications.
(Jeremiah 29:11) Amen.
