Hearing the Word (1 Corinthians 14:5-12)
Gary McManus, 07/29/2018Part of the Words that Divide, Words that Unite series, preached at a Sunday Morning service
July 29, 2018
Every Pentecost Sunday we remember the
birthday of the church. We focus on Acts,
chapter 2. The gift of the Holy Spirit is
DEMONSTRATED through speaking in
many other languages (Acts 2:11).
A tongue is your actual tongue.
A tongue is also a language. AND in the church
of Jesus Christ, a tongue is a spiritual language.
The tongue speaks to unite, praise or
to abuse (James 1:26, James 3:5-9)
Words themselves can unite or words can divide.
Sally Barrett is trying to overcome the barrier
of language. Sally Barret is trying to overcome
the barrier of ignorance. We have been given a
desire to reach people right here with the good
news of Jesus. Many do not know the Good News
we claim for ourselves.
Use words if necessary (Romans 10:17).
Faith comes from hearing. . . the message,
and the message is heard through the word about Christ.
The Apostle Paul spoke in tongues (1 Corinthians 14:18). It still exists today although some Christians say it does not. (1 Corinthians 13:8 )The Pentecostal denominations revived the use of tongues in worship.
But tongues—that spiritual language
does not unite the congregation (1 Corinthians 14:5).
Tongues must be interpreted in order to unite.
Reading the Bible in a different language than English does not edify or bless or unite us in our faith.
Sally’s work is our work.
We believe that other people near and far
need to hear what we know—the salvation that
God provided through Jesus, our Lord.
We, with others, need to hear and the people where
we live need to hear this same good news.

Words unite and words divide.
All souls need to come to Jesus.(Matthew 11:28)
Sally might use Old Slovene, the language of Slovenia.
She might use English. But another language she uses whether it is English or Slovenian is the language of compassion and caring. She cares about the people she has been sent to speak to.
People cannot live better lives WITHOUT Jesus Christ. No one has to live a bad life in order to want a better life with Jesus.
Words and actions show others compassion.
People together in fellowship and relationship can
Spread the love Jesus has for all.
