The Sea. You, and Jesus (Mark 6:45-52)
Gary McManus, 07/22/2018Part of the God's World series, preached at a Sunday Morning service
July 22, 2018 Mark 6:45-52 (p.997 / p.1008)
The beach IS a popular vacation spot for Americans.
That is NEW.
Before the Civil War no one wanted to go to the beach
unless you were a fisherman.
Israel had no history with the ocean.
--Patriarchs were nomadic herdsmen.
--Noah saw the world destroyed by water.
(See Genesis 7:11)
--Israel was rescued from slavery by a
destructive sea
The Egyptian Army was destroyed by the SEA.
(Exodus 15:21)
--The Israelites were not seafarers.
-- The promised land did not have a seacoast.
In America, explorers came by sea.
The first settlers not sailors but townspeople.
The term “beached” or “on the beach”
at one time meant poverty and helplessness.
The beach/ocean as a destination was the
result of the industrial revolution.
Austin Corbin and NYC’s famed
Manhattan Beach.
Austin Corbin, a wealthy industrialist in
New York City about 150 years ago
was told by a doctor that seaside living
would improve his son’s health.
And by the way, remember Jonah?
(Jonah 1:14-15)
Again, the sea usually meant death
and destruction—NOT a vacation spot.
The same word Sea or seas is in the Bible, 589 times.
The term “the waters”, is there 158 times.
The oceans are in the Bible!
In today’s reading, the sea is threatening!
The disciples are terrified.
Despite the disciples’ own experience,
they cry out in terror.
(see Mark 5, Mark 6:12-13, Mark 6)
Jesus’ words to them. . . I AM..
The presence of God is supposed to speak
to your fear(s). Does it?
DO you not know our Lord God so that
you remain afraid.
(See Deuteronomy 33:19, 2 Corinthians 11:25,
2 Corinthians 12:19, 13:5, Romans 8:31,
Matthew 1:31, Matthew 28:20
Psalm 148:7, Revelation 5:13)
I am with you always
[remaining with you perpetually
—regardless of circumstance,
and on every occasion]
-----Amen
