Politics. . .of 1765! You remember!
March 22, 1765—British Parliament
passes the Stamp Act.
It will never be realized!
It required Americans to pay a tax on every
piece of printed paper: ship's papers, legal
documents, licenses, newspapers, and
SERMONS!
Another major player in the politics of America
in 1700s, especially in Virginia:
The House of Burgesses: the elected
representative element of the General Assembly
which was the legislature of the Royal Colony
of Virginia in the Americas (together with a
King-appointed colony governor).
Members’ names most recognized:
Thomas Jefferson
George Washington
Patrick Henry
They adopted Patrick Henry's
Stamp Act Resolves.
The Royal Governor was so upset by them,
he dissolved the House of Burgesses.
The resistance to the British Crown’s tax
gave American’s the rallying cry:
“no taxation without representation.”
The results. . .
The stamp act was gone within a year.
The coffeehouse remained.
Parliament tried again:
--the Townsend Acts.
These were also repealed. . .
except. . .a Tea Tax.
Everyone drank tea!
Americans would pay their tax!
Or would they?
“A Sermon on Tea”, 1774:
Colossians 2:21:
“Touch not; taste not; handle not.”
: 2 Corinthians 3:17 is quoted in a sermon
(which is also printed) from Pastor Jonathan Mayhew.
Pastors encouraged the people to freedom.
--substitute beverages
--the story of patriot and future President,
John Adams.
The British Crown tried once too often to have
Americans pay.
--no tax on faith!
--tax the habit of tea? Resistance and substitution!
No taxation without representation.
The future government would not interfere or support religious faith. Have a blessed Fourth of July AND a cup of coffee. Amen
