Dad: Be Well, Be Healthy, Be Healed! (Matthew 4:23-25)
Gary McManus, 06/17/2018Part of the Life With Jesus is Better series, preached at a Sunday Morning service
Matthew 4:23-25 (p. 958 / p.968)
Dad: Be Well, Be Healthy, Be Healed!
In the United States, Dad’s health is challenged.
--Indiana ranks 41st healthiest state (No. 1 is healthiest!)
--Our counties, Delaware and Madison, are bottom of the botton:
Madison County 82nd county of 92 counties in health factors.
We rank near the top in all the bad things for health. . .overweight,
smoking, diabetes, . . .and now opioid addiction. . .
Men are always the worst offenders.
What about mental health?
Indiana has seen 30% increase in the suicide rate in just the last
18 years. More men die by suicide than women.
There are more military suicides than civilian
with about 97 percent of the suicides being male.
Suicide is now a PUBLIC HEALTH problem.
But why harp on death by suicide for men?
What about homelessness? More than half the
homeless people in this country are men.
What about jail. . .men outnumber women 6 to 1.
What about prison. . .men outnumber women 14 to 1.
It is tougher to be a man than most women imagine.
Men have problems in physical health AND mental health.
Dad’s health is at stake.
Pastors are even WORSE (Duke).
“Whatever drives someone to take their own life
ultimately begins in the mind.”
“. . .how important it is to have conversations
about mental health
--NBC News senior national correspondent
Kate Snow about the death of her
father-in-law by suicide in 2010:
See “the Gerasene demoniac”: Mark 5:1-17,Luke 8:26-37)
Jesus came healing body, mind and soul.
But the church isn’t helping Jesus!
Church-goer survey:
-- 36 percent of mentally ill churchgoers are told
that their illness is caused by sin.
--Another 34 percent of the sufferers are told that
their problems are caused by demonic possession.
So, if true, why work on mental health?
Pastor McManus: most problems in mental health are
located in the brain—an organ of the body. We suffer
chemical imbalances, inherited tendencies, inborn
tendencies in neural processing.
Even the most recent celebrity deaths by suicide
Were done by very successful people.
Headache pain—is it “only mental”?
The pain is in the head.
Faithful men, faithful Pastors and followers of Jesus
SUFFER with mental health issues and Jesus the healer
is OPEN to hear them out and to help anyone who
comes to him.
Mental health may not be just ONE thing.
PHYSICAL health is defined by several factors.
Matthew 22:37!
Jesus didn’t treat patients, he healed them!
Philippians 4:7
God is a healer.
Life After Darkness –a love story;
The power of love. Is your God not love?
(1 John 4:8) Amen.
