Holy Week: Jesus as Slave (John 13:13-17)
Gary McManus, 03/30/2018Part of the Holy Week series, preached at a Special event service
Holy Week John 13:13-17
American slavery and ancient slavery were two very different forms
of slavery. Ancient slaves were considered human beings and the Bible
outlines practices with regard to slavery. Ancient slavery was a more
“open” institution. There was more than one level of slavery.
Jesus washed the Disciples feet prior to the “last supper.”
This was the work of a slave. Peter protested. But see Philippians 2:8.
Max Lucado: “Nails didn’t hold Jesus to the cross. Love did.”
The real reason did not come down from the cross (because Jesus could have)
was Jesus’ great love for us. See Hebrews 2:14, Hebrews 5:8-9, and Philippians 2:7.
We are free to serve God because Jesus was obedient as a slave.
