Jesus and the Bible (Matthew 22:29)
Gary McManus, 10/01/2017Part of the God's Word is Life series, preached at a Sunday Morning service
October 1, 2017 Matthew 22:29
All this month of October here at DCC
we are celebrating the Protestant Reformation.
This month marks the 500th Anniversary of the
beginning of a PROTEST. Martin Luther with
many others had been and were formally
PROTESTING against the church. It was a very
dangerous thing to do. . .We will be learning more
about it all this month.
One of Martin Luther’s major teachings was that
we should only teach the Bible. In Martin Luther’s
day, those were fighting words. But before we take
up Luther’s fight for the Bible, we begin today
looking at Jesus and the Bible.
---- Warning: technical section of message -----
-- Jesus’ native language was Aramaic.
-- Aramaic is a dialect of Hebrew.
-- The Old Testament (Jesus’ Bible) was
written in Hebrew.
Because Jesus’ words were often recorded
in Aramaic, there are Aramaic phrases in the Bible.
[See Mark 5:41, Mark 7:34, “abba” , 1 Corinthians
16:22, and Jesus’ words from the cross, Psalm 22]
The New Testament was written in Greek.
So there were “Bibles” in Hebrew and those books
were already translated into Greek. Which one did
Jesus use?
What was so important about what Jesus said about
the Bible—the Old Testament scriptures?
[Some make a distinction between Jesus using the
Word of God and Jesus BEING the Word of God.
But most references are to Jesus using the scriptures
as the Word of God]
--technical section done---
We all would do well to take seriously Jesus’
statement. BECAUSE? . . .
1. Jesus said it. (That is enough reason!)
2. Jesus DOES KNOW the scriptures.
AND Jesus knows the power of God!
The people who heard Jesus teach said of Jesus. . .
See Mark 1:27, Matthew 22:33 and more. . .
AND from an early age. . .Luke 2:47
Jesus’ unique teaching . . .
See Matthew 5:21, Matthew 5:27, Matthew
5:33, Matthew 5:38, Matthew 5:43]
Jesus and the Jewish teaching leadership
disagreed openly with regard to the scriptures.
[See Matthew 22:15, Matthew 22:18, John 8:16,
Luke 20:26 ]
We modern peoples focus on Jesus’ teaching
that relate to our modern problems. . .
We don’t concern ourselves much about
Jesus’ teaching on giving or tithing or restitution.
[We pick and choose. . .we shouldn’t do that.]
What about Jesus’ teaching about the Messiah?
Jesus is right about everything else Jesus’ said
because Jesus WAS AND IS the Messiah.
Isaiah 61 quoted in Luke 4 (See Luke 4:14-21).
what we are led to believe was Jesus’ first public speech. . .
[More clarity from Jesus on being the Messiah:
John 11:21-27, Luke 7:20-23, Matthew 27:11,
John 19:15, Matthew 27:29, John 18:36
John 5:39, John 5:46, Mark 10:45, Matthew 20:28]
Do you believe that Jesus is the Messiah that Jesus
says he came to be? Amen
