Pastors for the Church (Colossians 2:1-8)
Gary McManus, 10/23/2016Part of the God's Word is Life series, preached at a Sunday Morning service
October 23, 2016
Colossians 2:1-8 (p. 1166, p. 1183)
Difficult Christians? How about annoying ones?
How about theologically annoying ones?
(See Galatians 1:6)
Human traditions still creep into the churches
today, don’t they?
Pastor Gary’s fallen hero pastors fell because
of human traditions which Jesus said:
It shall not be so among you."
--Matthew 20:25-26
DCC is structured NOT on human tradition.
We don’t vote because that is the way Americans
do things. . .we vote because everyone in the church
is valuable.
You are valuable because
1. We believe that God made you.
2. Because God saved you through Jesus Chirst
3. The Lord has placed His Holy Spirit within you.
So assuming that we are not NEW Christians or
deceived Christians, we should be speaking the truth in love.
Marc Dupont: Toxic Churches:
Restoration from Spiritual Abuse
Dupont reminds all:
keep our focus on our Lord Jesus.
(Colossians 2:6)
Jesus makes Pastors and church officers
(Ephesians 4:11). The work/job is
specialized but those who fill it are
not spiritually special/superior.
Mature, yes. Superior, no.
Pastor has response-ability to you.
Pastor Gary is a product of Jesus’ church.
Pastor Gary is still a product of Jesus’ church.

Pastor Gary McManus: ordained by churches,
trained by church people, called by the churches
to serve. (Ephesians 4:12-13)
1 Corinthians 12:7:
7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit
is given for the common good.
--the common good. . .OF THE CHURCH!
The gifts of the Spirit come TO and
THROUGH the CHURCH!
The church of Jesus’ mission remains
--spreading the good news about Jesus.
“Praise the Lord in the assembly” (numerous
places. See also Hebrews 10:24-25
Our assembly together is for the encouragement
of each person.
The church is where the many gifts of the Holy
Spirit are shared.

Church attendance is as vital to a disciple as a
transfusion of rich, healthy blood to a sick man.
– Dwight L. Moody
Churchgoers are like coals in a fire. When
they cling together, they keep the flame aglow;
when they separate, they die out.
--Billy Graham
