What to do (Luke 13:1-5)
Gary McManus, 04/21/2013Part of the DCC Basics series, preached at a Sunday Morning service
April 21, 2013 Luke 13:1-5
This has been a tragic week.
Do I need to review this?
What do you do? What do you say?
How can Jesus’ people say something?
We turn to Jesus’ words: . . .
People suffered. People died.
The people to whom Jesus is talking have
answers and Jesus asks
them questions.
EVEN Christians have said these things.
Jesus said NO (verse 3).
Jesus said, “this isn’t about sin”
. . .Let’s rephrase what Jesus said. . .
Is that what Jesus said or not?
Sin does not make people victims.
READ THE BIBLE!
Perfect world; page 1 and 2.
On page 3; the humans disobey.
On page 4; murder!
Jesus doesn’t want to miss a teachable moment
BUT. . .verse 5:
unless you repent, you too will all perish.”
Sin does NOT make us victims
BUT sin HAS consequences.
When faced with suffering, when faced with life and death, this is how the Pastor says it:
[There is a plan. There is help. There is hope.]
Our Lord has given Himself to deal with sin.
The question is: what are you going to do with that?
Words you can offer others:
More popular Christian things to say:
--God is still in charge or
--“everything happens for a reason”
Theologically acceptable.
Pastor wants to be helpful.
It is helpful to say,
“Trust God with your life.” Jesus said, (John 14)
“Let not your hearts be troubled,
believe in God, believe also in me.
“Believe in God believe also in me.”
Song: “Not for a moment” by Meredith Andrews
Every phrase of that song is found in scripture.
One last thing . . .
God Himself will wipe away every tear from our eyes.
. .God Himself will do it.
(Isaiah 25:6-8, Revelation 21:3,4) Amen
