Jesus is the Bread of Life (John 6:30-59)
Gary McManus, 11/16/2014Part of the Life With Jesus is Better series, preached at a Sunday Morning service
[Without quoting directly, some of the material from,
today’s message is contained in R.C. Sproul’s lectures,
“The I Am Sayings of Jesus.” Also, some ideas were a
part of Douglas Connely, Tyndale Press ]
We have been talking about the teaching of the church.
Now, “What did Jesus say?”
Jesus asked: “Who do you say that I am?”(Mark 8:29,
Matthew 16:15)
Big topic: the “I am” sayings of Jesus. . .
Jesus uses the phrase “I am” 31 times in John’s Gospel.
THIS ONE is the first one , 6:35.
This is DIVINE talk. IT is GOD talk!
(See Exodus 3:14, John 10:30, 10:38)
Americans and food. . .
Famine in the ancient world was a very REAL
possibility and famine brought death.
And there was the FEAR of famine.
In the 21st century we also know more about
food than any other generation before ours.
Consider what the Mayo Clinic says about the
“Mediterranean diet.”
Keep this is mind, please, as we consider Jesus’ words.
Moses and the Israelites faced a food crisis;
Exodus 6.
This is the discussion Jesus is having with the crowd.
Jesus is saying. . .GOD PROVIDES
and Jesus goes on to say. . .GOD IS PROVIDING.
[We can’t help but think of Communion
but more is here than that!]
Jesus is saying at that moment before
the crowd that just as bread gives life
--HE gives life.
The general idea is best captured in Jesus opening words
6:27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that
endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you.
We Americans eat so much that isn’t good for us.
The heavenly Father sent the Son that we might eat and live
. . .real food. . .for real life. . .forever.
Our God. . .our Creator and Sustainer. .
.our Savior wants you to know Him.
God wants us to know him so much,
that God came to us in Jesus.
Our God WANTS to be known by you.
It will bless us. God doesn’t want something
FROM us, God wants something FOR us.
See John 3:16. . .
One writer said that God wants you to be
satisfied. The bread of life satisfies.
BE satisfied by God in Christ. He is food indeed,
bread of heaven.
