Sing It: "He Appeared in the body. . ." (1 Timothy 3:16)
Gary McManus, 09/14/2014Part of the DCC Basics series, preached at a Sunday Morning service
Worship is an EXPRESSION of what we believe
It is important THREE ways.
--it is what we believe
--it is what we believe as found in God’s Word
--worship is also teaching us about what we believe
and God’s word.
Meeting together for worship is for YOUR benefit,
not God’s benefit.
The Lord wants that FOR you!
“Songs, hymns and spiritual songs”
(Ephesians 5:19, Colossians 3:16)
The Bible itself is made up of some of those songs:
Romans 1:1-6, Philippians 2:5-11,
1 Corinthians 15:3-7,
Ephesians 1:3-14, 1 Timothy 3:16, Titus 3:3-81,
Peter 1:18-21, 2:9-10, 2:24-25.
Our hymnal has hymns in it BASED on the Bible.
. .some more directly than others.
“traditional material”. . .but VERY important. . .
1. To contradict what is false
2. To maintain what is true
For example, the “Hymn of Christ”
Philippians chapter 2;
Jesus was indeed God.
This is a key factor in knowing that we are Christians.
If you can claim that Jesus is the Christ. .
.you are a believer, you have stepped INTO
the Christian faith.
You are NOT Jewish. You are NOT Muslim.
You are a Christian.
Jesus is the Christ of God. (Peter’s words,
Matthew 16:16, Luke 9:20)
That is exactly what we ask here at DCC
if you want to follow Jesus here at DCC.
“Do you believe that Jesus IS the Christ,
the son of the living God? And do you take
Him as your Lord and Savior. . .YES or NO?
So, this is important. . .essential.
In these words is the message of the Gospel:
God loved us so much as to come to us in human flesh.
Jesus succeeded in His mission to save us.
Christ Jesus dead and raised went to be with
The Heavenly Father.
This is a COSMIC truth!
Put an end to “foolish talk” and what is meaningless.
Go with the SURE word, SOUND teaching. .
(1 Timothy 1:10, 2 Timothy 4:3,
also Titus 1:9, 1:13, 2:1, 2:8)
THIS hymn (1 Timothy 3:16) is sound teaching.
This is a restatement of our faith.
This statement UNITES ALL Christians.
We SING it. We claim it. We proclaim it
to the glory of God the Father.
[But only one hymn references the verse (No. 127).
Hear: “My King is The Rock”
He appeared in the body / Vindicated by the spirit
Seen by angels / Preached among the nations
Believed on in the world / Taken up in glory
His name is Jesus / He is my King
My king is the rock and the rock is the lamb
And the lamb is the one who died for my sins;
He is holy / My God . . .Oh. . .my God.
This TRUTH has a claim on US.
These words DEFINE us and GUIDE us.
Other Hymns?
Another indicator of possible materials in God's Word
that were used in the worship are the "the saying is sure"
or "here is a trustworthy saying" statements. Clearly the Apostle
is referring to a known saying/statement/verse. What is the source of the saying? As a repeated brief statement, it is possible that the phrases come from worship; statements of faith or hymn words.
Here is where these phrases are found:
1 Timothy 1:15, 3:1, 4:9; 2 Timothy 2:11, Titus 1:13, 3:8;
When the Apostle refers to "the saying that is written,"
he is referring to God's Word, the Bible. (1 Corinthians 15:54)
