It's Not What You Know. . . (Acts 16:16-20)
Gary McManus, 06/22/2014Part of the Life With Jesus is Better series, preached at a Sunday Morning service
Words of the magician. . .
In the ancient world there were
believers in magic. They were not scientific.
We are a scientific people.
We BELIEVE in science.
Science is limited in what it can do.
It isn’t science versus FAITH in this world.
Science and faith actually can get along pretty well.
In the time of Jesus and the Apostles there
were several belief systems at work.
The Christian faith was a new set of beliefs
The only real issue was who was Jesus of Nazareth.
Pastor doesn’t claim proof as science often does.
Pastor claims millions who have seen
. . .”Life is way better with Jesus than without Jesus.”
Jesus healed, the Apostles healed.
Jesus drove out demons. The Apostles drove out demons.
Luke found a healing power for which there was
no potion, medication, or magic words. .
.the healing power was in the relationship with Jesus Christ.
This church recommends modern medicine.
And the church recommends Jesus Christ.
Luke tells us the problem:
She earned a great deal of money for her owners.
Her abilities are exploited.
The truth does not move the girl or her owners
to HEAR the message of salvation.
Interested in the magic/ the gift but
not interested in the truth that is given.
Money was their only interest (Vs 19-20)
[ The message of salvation is there:
See vs. 17 then vs 31-32 ]
Jesus healed them all! AND
Jesus did that without making a living at it.
Matthew (15:30-31)
The magicians (in Acts) are only interested in making money.
The crowds around Jesus respond in the right way
to what God is doing for them. .
They praised God.
The REAL answers are in a relationship
with Jesus Christ. Jesus is THE answer.
The spirit of prophesy the girl had could
make the slave owners money, but it couldn’t
help them hear the truth when it was spoken to them.
It isn’t science OR faith.
Science can help you. Jesus can save you.
Jesus can save you for a WAY better life.
