There is no longer Jew or Greek (1 Corinthians 10:31-11:1)
Gary McManus, 06/07/2020Part of the New Life series, preached at a Sunday Morning service
June 7, 2020 1 Corinthians 10:31-11:1
Much to say and not enough time. . .
State the obvious: first time since March 15th.
DCC is not as safe as it could be but the
best we know how for now.
Talk about the pandemic first.
Read the Bible with the news of the day.
Pastor reads the Bible with the news of
the day and a history book.
The Bible Word for today has been read.
The news today. . .you know.
It is hard to miss.
Pastor thought the nation addressed
this issue back in 2014; Ferguson, Missouri.. .
“Black Lives Matter”
We know ALL LIVES MATTER.
There has been mayhem and violence and destruction
in our cities’ streets.
Pastor has been sad. Pastor thought we dealt
with police brutality in the 1960s and 1970s.
Pastor thought we had learned something.
You remember. . .
Pastor will try to focus some of his feelings
through a history project: the Civil War veterans
of Daleville/ Salem Township.
Let’s remember our ideals.
Bible ideals: the Sermon on the Mount,
love one another, love your enemies, give more
than asked, turn the other cheek. All Jesus.
Today’s word from the Apostle Paul. . .
In Jesus Christ we are all equals
—equal before God in Jesus—all of us recipients
of the same divine grace –all of us.
So we are all children of God and inheritors of God’s
kingdom. ( See Luke 13:29 and 1 Corinthians 10:17).
Our nation’s ideals: the Declaration of Independence,
the 13th and 14th Amendment to the Constitution,
(the 19th Amendment), the Voting Rights Act (1965).
Again, an OLD problem: “white Americans have avoided reckoning with this problem.” EVEN Daleville, 1900.
ARE WE so far removed?
Meet some Salem Township Civil War veterans:
William Hobson, Augustus Sayford, and the Dusang brothers.
The Civil War that Daleville’s men fought and in which some died, brought an end to legalized slavery in this country.
Abraham Lincoln: (Gettysburg Address)
It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us—that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion—that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain—that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom. . .”
For us Christians, it begins at the communion table
(1 Corinthians 10:17): continue to work for a day
when all citizens can be equal before the law.
Amen.
