A TIme to Listen (Luke 10:38-42)

Luke 10:38-42
vs 38: “As Jesus and his disciples were on their way,
he came to a village where a woman named Martha
opened her home to him.”
The Bible does not tell us much about Martha and Mary.
Is this visit a follow up to Luke 10:1?
Most folks get the gist of this report.
Most get Martha’s problem and the broader meaning.
Check out the Bible versions. . .
Kids today would say that Martha needs to chill.
Can we muster any sympathy for Martha?
Look at the bigger picture of Jesus in front of
people. Some WANT something from Jesus.
Many come TO Jesus or call to Jesus.
Still Jesus did get invited places
(Luke 7:36, 14:10).
Did Zacchaeus have an agenda?
Martha and Mary don’t appear to have an agenda.
Remember who we are—people with many
agendas—get it done people.
Jesus even tells of rewarding those
who DO the right thing (Matthew 25:34-36).
But at Martha’s house Jesus seemed to be
saying one thing: listen to me. . .abide in me. . .
[See Elijah, 1 Kings 19:11-13]
LISTENING. . .just ONE way is probably
TOO limiting. We don’t want to limit the Lord’s
communication with us—we want to be open.
Pastor Charles Stanley, Listening to God
Use more than one way to listen to God. . .
Before Jesus got invited to Martha’s house,
Jesus was asked questions from a man who
had read God’s Word, . . can quote it. . .
(Luke 10:26-29)
Knowing wasn’t enough. . .
Jesus said that we do not live by bread alone
(Luke 4:4, Deut 8:3)
but by every word that proceeds from
the mouth of God. . .so, are we listening?
One more caution:
. . .
Presumably once someone has heard God
they are prepared to do.
Abide in the Lord. (John 15:4)
There will never be ANY fruit if the
branch does not abide in the vine. Amen
