Dealing With Shame (Hebrews 12:1-3)

March 8, 2020 Hebrews 12:1-3
The book of Hebrews, chapter 12 encourages the believer in endurance. Consider the runner!
Jesus COULD HAVE come down from the cross. . . .but did not! LOVE kept Jesus on the cross,
not the nails.
Guilt and shame don’t have to go together.
Jesus was crucified. In that crucifixion, we understand
that Jesus did have to deal with shame.
Do you or have you?
Hebrews 12:2.
Jesus despised the shame. Jesus scorned the disgrace.
Jesus disregarded the shame. Jesus ignored the disgrace.
Jesus did not keep that shame from fulfilling his task
in being crucified.
Death on a cross was a real problem for some people to believe in Jesus, Corinthians 1:23-24.
The punishment of crucifixion FITS OUR crimes.
With that truth we begin to appreciate the shame of the cross.
--Jesus did not deserve death.
--Jesus did not deserve death by crucifixion.
--The Messiah did not deserve death.
--The son of God did not deserve death at the hands of evil men.
Jesus was shamed in several other ways:
--Nakedness was shameful and the Bible said so:
(Isaiah 47:3; Revelation 3:18; 16:15).
People were crucified naked. Jesus was shamed. . .
1. As a naked Jewish man.
2. As a righteous Jewish man
(Galatians 3:13)
3. As a decent citizen/person.
4. As a person who did wonderful things for others
As a person who did nothing wrong.
5. As a person some said was Messiah. (so, + 1. and 2.)
6. As a person who could do something about
that moment, but does not/ did not.(so, + 1. 2. 5.)
See Luke 23:36 and Mark 15:29.
Shame on top of shame. . .
Crucifixion was reserved for the lowest people in society. But Jesus took on the crucifixion as shameful as it was.
So whenever we might feel shame,
Jesus knows what that is like. Jesus suffered shame.
Often that is not the end of shame.
.Remorse is often a shame repeated in our thoughts.
(Revelation 12:10).
Only when we begin to follow Jesus do we understand the depth of our wrongdoing
Does that happen to other Christians?
Didn’t it happen to the disciples?
Matthew 28:7, Mark 16:7, John 21
Jesus appeared to them.
Jesus came to them.
And what about Paul, persecuting the church?
Philippians 4:13
Amen.
