What does the Lord want FOR you? (Luke 4:16-21)
Gary McManus, 07/07/2019Part of the Life With Jesus is Better series, preached at a Sunday Morning service
July 7, 2019 The Fourth Sunday After Pentecost
Luke 4:16-21 (p. 1018 /p. 1030)
Jesus’ opening declaration of Jesus as Messiah.
The Jews of Jesus’ day might have been expecting
a Messiah, but there was very little agreement about what KIND of Messiah was expected and what Messiah would do once Messiah showed up.
Remember, in Jesus’ day there were parties/circles/traditions
--Pharisees
--Sadducees
--Zealots
--The Dead Sea Sect
Jesus even told us to beware of pretenders.
(Matthew 24:23-24, Matthew 24: 26Mark 13:5-6,
Mark 13:22, Luke 21:8) So did the Apostles warn us
. . .( Acts 5:36-37, 2 John 1:7, 2 Peter 2:1-2)..
Luke’s Gospel book is the only one to share
this inaugural Jesus message. But Matthew’s book
shows us John the Baptist sending questions to Jesus. . .
Matthew 11:3: “Are You the One who is to come,
or should we expect someone else?”
(Jesus’ response: Matthew 11:4-5)
--Notice: it’s the same list.
Our prayers often focus on what WE WANT.
Pastor says that our God wants something
FOR us rather than our God wants something
FROM us.
We think we know. . .but do we?
Remember Matthew 8:2-3?
(See Leviticus 13:3)
What did Jesus want for that man?
. . .restoration. . .
(Matthew 5:24, Luke 12:58, Romans 5:10-11,
2 Corinthians 5:18)
BE MORE CURIOUS ABOUT WHAT THE
LORD WANTS FOR ME AND YOU.
from R.T. France, Jesus and the Old Testament:
Lord’s Anointed is peaceful and merciful, engaged
in a mission of RELIEF, COMFORT, and
DELIVERANCE. . .
Jesus EMPHASIZES deliverance which is fulfilled
healing (literal) and at Jesus’ word (the preaching).
Deliverance has come with Jesus Messiah!
W.D. Davies: Jesus response lists SIX items
in fulfillment.
And already by chapter 11 Matthew has reported
all six items of fulfillment.
BLESSING. . .the poor and the mourner.
--Israel’s CONDITION in Jesus’ day. . .
--Blessed are you poor.
Certainly the economically poor but that
is not the worst. . .you/they are poor because
you/they have no EARTHLY help.
To you Jesus says. . .I have good news for you;
I am here.
