2 Corinthians 4:13-18 Thanksgiving Sunday
Teaching history is not easy. You can’t teach
everything.
Historians try to make sense of history
—to explain what happened, when and why.
See , “Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything
Your American History Textbook Got Wrong.”
by James W. Loewen.
Is it because Americans love first place.
As Americans we want to know who had the
FIRST Thanksgiving. The Pilgrims, right?

But was it?
Other European Christians had come to America
before the Pilgrims got here.
Brief timeline of American colonization
by Europeans
1564--Fort Caroline, near Jacksonville, FL, French,
established by French Protestants (Huguenots)
destroyed by Spain.
1565—Florida: St. Augustine founded by the Spanish
1607—Virginia: Jamestown, the Virginia Company
FIRST ENGLISH COLONY established in America
1619—Virginia: “Berkeley Plantation”(Berkeley Hundred)
(upriver from Jamestown)
1620—Massachusetts: Plymouth, The PILGRIMS
1622—Berkeley Hundred destroyed by natives.

Celebrate that they all want to be first. . .
to have given thanks. . . to God!
The Apostle Paul encourages the congregations
multiple times to “give thanks.”
See also, 1 Thessalonians 5:18
Whether English Protestant, Anglican or Separatist,
Spanish Catholic or French Huguenot. . .all gave
thanks to the Lord God, Father of Jesus, the Christ.
They want to be thankful AND they want to be
FIRST at it.
Yes, American dollars are at stake (tourism).
Pastor still votes for the Pilgrims.
The Pilgrims WERE religious people.
All of life for those Pilgrims was about God
and pleasing God.
The Pilgrims are FIRST in our hearts.
THEY had faith in their hearts.
Amen.
