Jesus Left. . .for Our Good (Acts 1:1-11)
Gary McManus, 05/06/2018Part of the Life With Jesus is Better series, preached at a Sunday Morning service
May 6, 2018 Ascension Sunday
Act 1:1-11 (p.1077 / p.1090)
John’s Gospel: Jesus, six times, says. . .
I am going TO the Father.
Acts tells us about that departure.
John wants us to notice something else. . .
Jesus-going-to-the Heavenly Father
is not “just a nice homecoming story.”
Remember the cross. . .
The way to the Heavenly Father was through
the cross.
Going home for many means the work is done. . .
now one can go home.
Not so with Jesus.
Jesus’ Ascension was a part of Jesus’
work for us and on our behalf.
Simply put, if Jesus does NOT go
to the Heavenly Father,
then neither can we go to the Heavenly Father.
If Jesus does not go to the heavenly Father,
then we cannot receive the Holy Spirit.
See John 14:3, John 14:18, John 15:26,
John 16:7
“. . .Going away. . .”: John 14:28, John 16:7
The earthly Jesus = Jesus of Nazareth—
what most of the Gospel books are about.
Jesus Christ= the eternal Jesus who was
and is and ever shall be.
To day is a lot about Jesus Christ,
The resurrected Jesus.
Jesus did a lot in dying on the cross and
JESUS DID EVEN MORE THAN THAT.
Jesus will be seated AT God’s right hand.
Jesus is making intercession for us, fulfilling
Isaiah 53:12
See Hebrews 7:25
With Jesus’ ascension, Jesus continues His work
on our behalf.
John 16:7 (various versions)
Comforter, Counselor, Companion, Helper, Strengthener
Amen.
