Add Goodness (2 Peter 1:3-11)
Gary McManus, 03/11/2018Part of the DCC Basics series, preached at a Sunday Morning service
2 Peter 1:3-11
This season before Easter (Lent)
at DCC we are talking about LOVE IN ACTION.
Living for Jesus isn’t as easy as it might sound.
Read 2 Peter.
2 Peter not everyone’s favorite.
There are difficult “Christians” in that church.
[2 Peter 1:20, 2:2, 3:16.]
But, don’t miss what the Apostle is saying
for the rest of us.
ADD GOODNESS!
Virtue? What do you think?
That is where the emphasis IS in 2 Peter.
To faith—which we cannot see. . .
the Apostle states, ADD GOODNESS
. . .something you CAN see
—something others CAN SEE.
Verse 14. . ., since you are looking
forward to this, make every effort. . .
Two reasons WHY the Christian faith
should have a GOOD reputation.
--a good reputation for DOING GOOD.
1. God has supplied the believer for that very purpose. . .
2. We should not be UNPRODUCTIVE. (2 Peter 1:8)
God has not supplied you MERELY
to keep out of trouble.
Our Lord expects us to DO GOOD
and give Jesus’ church and Jesus a good reputation.
The New Testament talks about GROWING.
(See Colossians 1:10 and one of our own
Affirmations of Faith, Titus 2:11-14.)
The Apostle claims he is Jesus’ salve.
2 Peter 1:1.
What about the rest of us?
(See 1 Corinthians 6:20)
The slave to Jesus relationship is inalienable.
We are possessed.
There are times of waiting (Psalm 37,
Luke 12:36-37).
A slave is to be obedient.
It isn’t whether we DO well enough.
With the Bible it appears to be pretty much
DO or don’t DO, there is no middle ground.
Obey or disobey, there isn’t any room for
lying around.
Slaves didn’t have a day off except the Sabbath
(Deuteronomy 5:14) but keeping the sabbath
WAS obedience to God--DOING something
for God.
God commanded it for the Israelites AND their slaves.
Are you in the Secret Service?
The Christian Faith is NOT an intellectual exercise.
The Christian faith is a WAY of life.
(John 14:6, Acts 9:2)
AMEN
