Family of God (2 Timothy 1:5-7)
Gary McManus, 02/17/2013Part of the DCC Basics series, preached at a Sunday Morning service
Americans believe in family.
Some even claim to believe in family values.
Did those exist in the ancient world?
Christianity was a DIFFERENT and
DISTINCT religion from all the other religions.
The ancient Romans had “household Gods.”
(lares and pentes)
But Christianity makes an EXCLUSIVE
claim on the life and heart of the believer.
Matthew 4:10, 10:34ff., 1 Corinthians 10:21ff.
When people converted to Christianity
in the ancient world, they were leaving
behind the religion they grew up with.
Exceptions: compare 1 Corinthians 1:16, Acts 16:33
The Apostle mentions these relationships
together because THREE generations of
believers WAS remarkable.
It might have been unusual.
Remember, children are made by procreation.
Christians are made by re-generation by the
Holy Spirit.
“The Family of God” isn’t just a pretty
hymn lyric. It is a deep spiritual truth.
Only our Lord can make MORE Christians.
So, the Apostle is excited to exclaim:
2 Timothy 1:5-7
Notice what the Apostle goes on to say. . .
The Holy Spirit is at work
in us—the CHURCH of Jesus Christ.
THAT brings us to DCC new EMPHASIS:
