February 12, 2017 Romans 5:6-11 (p. 1116 / p.1130) Valentine’s Day Sunday. . .SAINT VALENTINE’S DAY SUNDAY, thank you very much!
Flowers, candy and romance? Or, faith, blood
and death?
Saint Valentine (whoever he is) died for his faith
in Jesus Christ.
Valentine and love? That we know from the Bible,
don’t we?
The greatest commandments: (love) the Lord,
(love) your neighbor.
Leviticus 19:18 and Deuteronomyt 6:5 and John 3:16
1 John 4:8
The one who does not love does not know God,
because God is love.
Love Beyond Reason, John Ortberg
We’re not working for heaven.
But that is many people’s interpretation
of getting into heaven.
Jesus came, suffered and died so that you
and I could go to heaven. (Romans 5!)
This is the love that Jesus has for us.
This is the love that Valentine knew in his lifetime.
This is the love that Valentine could not give up.
And chocolate? Well, a woman who knew better
wrote to “Dear Abby.”
Loving people we’re not sure we want to
love but God DOES love them.
See Matthew 20:1-15.
IS God unfair? Or is God THAT generous?
(THAT loving?)
This is a love that Valentine lived for.
This was a love that Valentine felt he had to die for.
Valentine knew that the Emporer could kill his body
but Valentine knew that the Lord loved Valentine’s
soul and believed Jesus when Jesus said, (John 11:25-26)
“I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”
This Saint Valentine’s Day get some chocolate anyway but also REMEMBER the Jesus that Saint Valentine proclaimed ‘til death. . . Amen
