Jesus is Healer (Matthew 14:13-36)
Gary McManus, 08/07/2016Part of the Jesus Came to Restore series, preached at a Sunday Morning service
Matthew 14:13-14, 34-36
Miracles from Heaven, film, available on DVD
Pastor McManus recommends both film and book although
the book is better. It tells the true events of the Beam
Family of Texas. There was an incurable illness, an accident,
and then a miracle. Pastor emphasized the following:
The Beam Family did NOT have a crisis of faith.
The Beam Family did NOT need to have more faith.
But the Beam Family did HAVE FAITH in God
and in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Jesus told people to have faith, not have MORE faith.
When Jairus, the Jewish leader, learned of his daughter's death,
Jesus turned to Jairus and said, “Don’t be afraid;
just believe, and she will be healed.” "She will be saved"--
both translations are correct. Jairus had sought Jesus knowing
Jesus could HEAL his daughter. It is different to expect Jesus
to raise the dead. Where does your faith take you? (See Luke 8:40-56)
Pastor spent several hours updating
the church's prayer list—the people with illness.
Our God is called healer or God is the one
who heals. (See Genesis 20:17, Exodus 15:26,
2 Chronicles 30:20, Psalm 30:2, Psalm 107:20,
Isaiah 53:5, Hosea 11:3, and some 40 times in
the Gospels, 9 in the Book of Acts). The Elders
of DCC have offered healing services for several years.
How we understand illness and the medical care
delivery system. They have changed dramatically.
Today most American health maladies are “chronic”. . .
--more than 3 months
--cannot be prevented by vaccines or cured by medication
--they don’t go away
--they may result in physical symptoms/results that
will kill
--Many are age related: eighty-eight percent of Americans
over 65 years of age have at least one chronic health condition.
Now here is the rub.
Now we live twice as long. We now spend a large portion
of our lives getting old. We spend a large portion of our
lives getting chronically ill.
Healing in Jesus’ century and even disease in Jesus’ Century
looks a lot different than it does in our Century.
Jesus is a healer:
Matthew 19:2, Matthew 21:14, Mark 1:34,
Mark 3:10, Luke 4:40, Luke 5:15,
Luke 6:18; and the disciples healed:
Acts 5:16, Acts 8:7.
In most of these verses faith is not mentioned.
It doesn’t mean that people didn’t have faith
—they must have had faith in Jesus’ ability to heal
or they would not have sought Jesus out.
Jesus never used the phrase “MORE FAITH.”
(See Mark 9:29 (KJV))
Plenty of illness at DCC.
Jesus remains the same (Hebrews 13:8)
See Luke 5:18-19.
Jesus restored: Matthew 9:30, Mark 8:28, Luke 6:10.
Healing isn’t just for the body.
Kevin Beam: “We’ve been where you
are. . .a lot of pain. Times can be challenging
and very rough. . .The thing I have found is
that the faithfulness of God has been what I
can count on and rest assured upon.
The Beams had faith. So do you. Remain faithful.
Seek Jesus. Give yourself to him.
Our Lord is a healer. Amen
