Lord, Have Mercy (Matthew 20:29-34)
Gary McManus, 08/23/2015Part of the God's Love; Beyond Belief series, preached at a Sunday Morning service
This report of two blind men healed
appears in a similar form in Mathew 9:27-31.
But that does not make them the same.
The words and actions of Jesus are
different in each report.
Son of David: This was a popular name
for the Messiah.
The restoration of sight was to be a sign of
the Messiah’s coming: Isaiah 29:18, Isaiah 35:4,
Isaiah 42:18, Isaiah 61
The people of the Bible WANTED the Messiah
to come so the Messiah could CHANGE things.
Blindness in the ancient world usually meant poverty.
It was suggested that God made people blind
(Exodus 4:11, John 9:2, Acts 9:8)
Even the disciples concluded that God does things
because of sin when the disciples don’t REALLY
KNOW why God does the things that God does.
GOD can cure blindness.
They shouted. . . LORD
“Lord, Son of David”
“Son of David” = Messiah
“Lord, Son of David, have mercy. . . .on us. ‘
They asked. . . for mercy
Mercy. . .Compassion
Two different Greek words.
They ask for mercy. They receive compassion.
It is God’s goodness that is provoked by our need.
The Lord responds out of God’s goodness to render aid.
Compassion is to come to someone—at their level,
where they live, where they hurt. . .
We are told Jesus’ OWN FEELINGS towards the blind men.
Notice.: The men had to call on the Lord
MORE than once. They shouted LOUDER.
I don’t know HOW Jesus will help you.
Do we know always what we need?
Sometimes the GOODNESS of God
is NOT giving us what we ask for.
James 5:11, Galatians 2:20, Ephesians 5:2
Remember to pray one of the most effective
prayers in the whole Bible. .
not asking for something specific but
“Lord, have mercy on me.” Amen.
