Serve the Lord God ONLY (Matthew 4:10)
Gary McManus, 01/18/2015Part of the Words that Divide, Words that Unite series, preached at a Sunday Morning service
Remember I Tim 4:16 from last week. . .
The most fundamental statement of faith for
Christians: Jesus is the Christ the son of the living God.
(Matthew 16:16)
Words that divide and words that unite.
Matthew 4:10 references Deuteronomy 6:13.
Then see Exodus chapter 20 and Joshua 24
[Full Chapter]
Serving and worshiping our God is an EXLUSIVE act.
[See 1 Corinthians 10:21]
[Pssst (secret): There really aren’t ANY other Gods.]
People will and do make something out of wood or stone
and call it a God—those are their Gods. But they are not real.
The God of the Bible is saying, don’t pray to any statue or
image or whatever if may depict or form it may take..
I am your one true God and you are to only worship me.
The word “idol” is a Greek word meaning literally IMAGE.
Those who DO worship images of God,
are not followers of the true God.
Deuteronomy 6 (NIV)
These same words are fundamental to THREE different religions:
Judaism, Christianity and Islam. They are mutually EXCLUSIVE.
Christians have a confession of Jesus as Messiah/Christ.
Muslims have a statement that the Lord God is one
and Mohammed is HIS PROPHET.
So, we should NOT be concerned . . .and YET
Islam has a TRADITION of political power AND religion
in the same hands. We see this tradition.
They MIGHT be able to allow the other religions to exist,
but they cannot allow PROMOTION of OTHER religions.
Most persecution of Christians occurs in Muslim countries.
The problem at Duke University. . .
Words that divide and words that unite.
God wants us to know Him.
God has revealed himself.
God showed us who God is.
God showing us who God is was for OUR benefit.
Our God is a solo act. That is called monotheism.
(See Exodus 15:11, Deuteronomy 6:4, Isaiah 44:6)
That separates us from the Hindus and most Buddhists.
It also separates us from groups who say that we can
become God or become like God. Only God is God.
(Exodus 20:5) But God’s jealousy is not an insecurity.
God’s jealousy is for our good to keep us from wandering off.
God is looking for volunteers. . .faithful volunteers.
Jesus called his followers.
(Matthew 11:28, Jeremiah 24:7, Jeremiah 31:34)
