Hymns and Songs; Worship, Part 2 (Colossians 3:9-17)
Gary McManus, 08/31/2014Part of the DCC Basics series, preached at a Sunday Morning service
WE do not sing because we are good at it.
No where in the Bible are we told to SING WELL!
“Make noise!” (1 Chronicles 15:28, Psalm 33:3 )

Check out details of today’s reading:
Colossians 3:9-17
Singing has always been a part of worship.
What were they singing?
Bible explanation. . .”Psalms, , hymns, and
songs from the Spirit.”. . .ALL of them.
The music is used by the church in its teaching.
In the New Testament, some of the words ARE
the teaching: Romans 1:1-6, Philipians 2:5-11,
1 Corinthians 15:3-7,
Ephesians 1:3-14, 1 Timothy 3:16, Titus 3:3-81,
Peter 1:18-21, 2:9-10, 2:24-25.
Several versions of this verse. . .
Shall we sing “spiritual songs” or
are we supposed to sing “while in the Spirit?”
We even speak these praises. (Ephesians 5:19)
Simply doing the singing is not enough.
(Mark 7:6) But even if our HEART is not in it,
we are teaching and we are learning.

Protestants changed worship a LOT.
Two songs have remained.
Gloria Patri (literally, glory to God) is a prayer.
“World without end”? The world is NOT the earth.
It may be the “world of praise.”
It may be the New Heaven and New Earth
(2 Peter 3:13, Revelation 21:1-2).
They shall glorify God without end Amen.
“The Doxology” or Song of Praise; this too is a
Protestant form of the scriptures. (Ephesians 1:3, and “all praise”)
is contained over 30 times in the Psalms alone.
In worship we practice what we preach. Amen.
