Why Perish? (John 3:16-19)
Gary McManus, 03/16/2014Part of the Why Hell? series, preached at a Sunday Morning service
John 3:16-19
Disclaimers from the Pastor:
--I don’t intend to assign folks to Hell.
--Listen to my word choices carefully.
(The sermon and notes will help.)
The New Testament uses the word “perish”
over thirty times. Jesus used the word.
[esp Luke 13:3,5, John 3:16]
See Jesus’ parables (Matthew 22:1 ff)
The Bible says that people may perish.
Jesus seems concerned that there will be people
who will perish. How come?
The message of Jesus is a proclamation of salvation
AND Jesus’ message comes with a warning
(Joachim Jeremias, Parables, p. 169)
(And what of Luke 9:51-56??)
Remember Lazarus and the rich man, Luke 16:19-31.
There is apparently a choice to be made. Choose wisely
or choose poorly. But if you choose poorly, Jesus saw
destruction, perishing, death, being lost, being ruined.
Look at the MOST famous choice ever; Genesis 3
Why did Adam and Eve want to die that day?
What would make them do that?
All because of their desire.
God wants salvation for us.
(1 Timothy 2:4, Titus 2:11)
But there is a problem. And the problem is us.
The problem is our desires.
We want what we want
—we don’t want what God wants.
That is what sin is.
Getting what we want leads to death.
(James 1:14-15, Romans 6:23, 2 Thess 2:10)
The Lord wants you to be saved; NOT to perish.
The good news is that YOU can be saved. Amen.
