He Heals Broken Hearts (Luke 7:26-50)

February 16, 2014 Luke 7: 36-50 (p. 1023)
What is going on inside people is rarely
spoken of in the Bible.
However, we are often given many clues.
The woman in today’s reading—we don’t
even know her name.
We are told that she is a sinner.
This woman was apparently into sin in a big way.
Simon has two problems with this:
-- the woman is touching Jesus (Jesus’ purity is compromised)
--Jesus doesn’t seem to notice or care
(What kind of prophet could Jesus be, then?)
We are not told but Pastor surmises:
This woman’s heart is broken.
When Jesus heals people, they do not require medical
care anymore. This woman appears to be demonstrating
that she is indeed completely healed in her heart.
Jesus tells us that the woman’s actions are actions of love.
The Bible even says that love has a lot to do with loving
yourself AND loving others.
Something has changed dramatically for this woman
The change this woman has experienced. . .
this is new life IN Jesus Christ.
Jesus has mended this woman’s broken heart.
Jesus healed her.
This work was what Jesus saw the Messiah’s work to be
when Messiah came to bring the Kingdom of God.
See Matthew 12:28.
Jesus’ own instructions to the disciples. . .
Luke 10:8-9
Hear the word of God:
Psalm 147:3, Hosea 14:4
Your healing was paid for by the Blood of Jesus!
(1 Peter 2:24, Dt 32: 39, Ps 103:3, Isa 53:5,
Heb 12:13, Jas 5:16)
And what the Apostle said in Peter’s Letter
was first said in the book of the prophet Isaiah.
(Isaiah 53 esp vs. 5)
Compare Isaiah 42 with Isaiah 61
(and here the Lord God is talking to the Messiah, Jesus)
Isaiah 61:1He has sent me to bind up the broken hearted. .
A quick note on ancient medicine. . .
Binding was known throughout the ancient world:
Mesopotamia, Greece, Egypt and Rome.
Psalm 147:3, Isaiah 61, Hosea 6:1, Luke 10:34
(check several translations)
.Jesus has come to help heal the hearts of the people.
Their healed hearts can be hearts for God and their
healed hearts can be loving hearts.
Jesus commanded us to love, John 13:34-35
