Call on Line One (1 Timothy 6:12-16)
Gary McManus, 10/06/2013Part of the DCC Basics series, preached at a Sunday Morning service
The call to become a Pastor.
The call to be a follower of Jesus Christ.
The word “call” appears 480 times in God’s Word.
There are many different meanings of the word.
The church of Jesus Christ has always believed that every believer has received a call to become a follower of Jesus Christ. That is how the Bible describes the people of Jesus’ church. (Romans 8:28, 2 Thessalonians 1:11)The examples of such callings (even the precedent) for the idea that we are all called to follow Jesus by Jesus Himself, is the example of the disciples. (Matthew 4:21, Mark 1:20)
All have RECEIVED a calling from the Lord to follow him. That happens many different ways. Even through others (John 1:40-42)
And what was Jesus’ call? -- to follow him.
[See Romans 6:3, 23, 8:9, 8:11, 1 Corinthians 15:22, 2 Corinthians 5:17-19]
. . .to have Christ IN YOU is to live Jesus--not your life anymore but Christ in you (Gal 2:20)
All have been called. Some are called to particular work. The Apostle Paul states that he was CALLED to be an Apostle. (Romans 1:6, 1 Corinthians 1:1).
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” Ephesians 2:10
So, we are baptized INTO Christ and in Christ we have eternal life . . .but we have good works to do. . .WE are ambassador (2 Corinthians 5:20), a letter (2 Corinthians 3), Soldiers (2 Timothy 2:3)—ALL of us have this work to do. AND some of us have also been called to particular service.
Today, we celebrate Jesus’ call. Amen
