Gotta Read All the Bible (Matthew 22:34-40)
Gary McManus, 09/29/2013Part of the God's Word is Life series, preached at a Sunday Morning service
Bible verses that helped me help you.
God’s Words that were life to the Pastor.
The Word of God is LIFE.
[Deuteronomy 32:47, Psalm 119:25,37,107,
John 5:24, 6:63,68, Philippians 2:16, 1 John 1:1 ].
God’s Word isn’t just valuable or a good guide.
God’s Word is helpful. It gives life!
God’s Word helps us help others.
In today’s lesson, the question that Jesus was asked was actually a common question for the rabbis to discuss. But since Jesus spoke with authority (Matthew 9:8). So here the question for Jesus WAS a test.
Jesus’ reply was not UNKNOWN to the rabbis.
Jesus answers from the Bible (Old Testament).
Here Deuteronomy and Leviticus
Matthew 22:37 Deut. 6:5
Matthew 22:39 Lev. 19:18
Quoting the Old Testament in response to the question, . .lets notice what Jesus did NOT say:
Jesus did not say, “skip the rest” or “forget the rest”. Jesus did not say that these two commandments replace, or displace or erase the law and the prophets.
WWJD? WWJR?
What would Jesus READ?
Parts of the Old Testament can be hard to read.
That does not excuse anyone from reading the
Old Testament
Why read the Bible including the Old Testament?
1) the OT is about Jesus: over 300 prophecies tell about the Messiah. And not ALL are in the books of the prophets.
2) Jesus read the OT and we know that because
--Jesus quoted the OT and from many books
--Jesus said he came to fulfill the OT (Matthew 5:17)
3) the disciples learned and quoted the OT
See Luke 24:27, 24:44, John 1:45, 2:19, 12:16
4) The Apostle Paul knew the OT, quoted it in
several places.
The writer of Hebrews quotes from the Hebrew
Bible at least 33 time to make his points.
Ideas you won’t know without the Old Testament:
angels, heaven, redemption, covenant, sin offering, lamb’s blood, Messiah and many more
Even our hymns in our hymnal; see p. 551.
Remember,
1) Knowing the Bible ALONE is not enough.
2) Claiming to know Jesus is not enough.
Jesus said that only those who heard his words and did them were like a person who built a house on a strong foundation (Luke 6:47). Jesus said,”anyone who loves me will obey my teaching (John 14:23).
The Word of God will revive you (Psalms 19:7),
In God’s Word we may behold wonderful things (119:18) (119:105) It says that the scriptures are a light for your path; God’s Word will be your counselor (119:24)
