Whose Messiah Is It, Anyway? (Luke 9:51-56)
Gary McManus, 08/13/2017Part of the Life With Jesus is Better series, preached at a Sunday Morning service
Christians—and even pagans have a sense of
right, wrong, and retribution.
Jesus, at this point, is determined to go to
Jerusalem and what awaits him there.
They pass through Samaria on the way.
Jesus mission is rejected.
The disciples are ‘upset.’
Can we have any sympathy for them?
But Jesus REBUKES them. . .
[more later on this]
James and John’s reaction IS
BIBLICAL ! See 2 Kings 1:10.
Also 1 Kings 18:38.
The disciples are with Jesus ‘men of GOD.’
Are not .James and John only asking what
Elijah would want?
But JESUS REBUKES THEM.
Rebuke
JESUS REBUKES EVIL SPIRITS
[ also Luke 4:41 and others and the waves,
Luke 8:24].
Two rebukes from Jesus to the disciples.
And it isn’t the only time that the disciples
seem to fail.
Matthew 16:9, Matthew 16:11
John 13:7, Matthew 26:40, Mark 14:37-38
But Jesus is not put off by the disciples
behavior/failures. Jesus is full of reassurance,
Luke 12:32.
Jesus will even thank God the Father for these
very same disciples.
[Matthew 11;25-6, Luke 10:21, John 17;6]
And so friends, also with you.
Now, can we then trust Jesus, trust the Lord
God in the way He leads to the Kingdom?
Amen.
