A Mission from God (Luke 13:31-35)

July 9, 2017 Luke 13:31-35
Pastor really is going to talk about
an animal but before we get there:
There are three figures in this report
in Luke’s gospel: Jesus, the Pharisees
and Herod.
Herod the Great Antipas
[not Antipater who was another son whom
Dad (Herod the Great) had executed]
One Kingdom under Herod the Great
became three “kingdoms” under three
sons: Antipas, Phillip, Archelaus.
Antipas (Luke 13)
Antipas had John the Baptizer killed.
[See Luke 3:20, Luke 9:9]
So, now, Verse 31” At that time some
Pharisees came to Jesus and said to him,
‘Leave this place and go somewhere else.
Herod wants to kill you.’”
Should we be surprised by this?
The Pharisees here appear helpful and
sympathetic.
[Some Pharisees were open to Jesus:
Luke 7:36, Luke 11:37, Luke 14:1]
See also Acts 5:34, Acts 15:5, Acts 23:6.
The Pharisees advice: cross the state line.
Jesus replies to their warning. . .
And Jesus means:
1. Jesus is on a mission from God.
2. Jesus will continue.
3. Jesus will continue until he completes it.
4. Jesus can’t be killed until Jesus
goes to Jerusalem. This Jesus will also do.
(Jesus will not be stopped YET.
Someday (soon), Jesus will be stopped.
Herod will be glad. (Luke 23).)
FOX!
Fox or jackal?
Red foxes and Blandford’s foxes are
native to Israel (modern and ancient)
A fox is NO lion!
Jesus is not intimidated by Herod’s plan.
Are you not on a mission from God?
Are you not called?
(Matthew 28:16-20, 1 Corinthians 4-11)
Jesus was doing God’s will and Jesus was
opposed. And you?
Jesus’ answer: “I will keep on. . .”
Jesus is teaching us, HIS church.
Whatever God has called you to do, do it!
Jesus message to Herod, “I will finish the work.”
Amen.
