Gary McManus, 06/04/2017Part of the Holy Spirit series, preached at a Sunday Morning service
June 4, 2017 Pentecost Sunday Joel 2:28-29, Acts 2:1-21
The Power of the Holy Spirit
Romans 15:13: one of the few places the Bible states, “the power of the Holy Spirit.”
Other mentions of the Spirit’s power:
1 Corinthians 2:4 , Ephesians 3:16 , 1 Thessalonians 1:5,
2 Timothy 1:7.
40th Wedding Anniversary; Gary & Deb
40th Anniversary: first ‘Star Wars” film
“May the Force be with you.”
The “Force” = an energy field
What is the power of the Holy Spirit?
First: we do not tap Holy Spirit power;
We do not utilize Holy Spirit power (See John 3:8)
The Holy Spirit is much more like a gift.
Paul writes of “a mind governed/controlled
By the Spirit.
We cannot use the Holy Spirit because
the Holy Spirit uses us.
Real example from DCC (the sermon)
See Paul on “tongues”:
1 Corinthians 12, 1 Corinthians 14:5
The sermon of and by the Holy Spirit
is for hearing, understanding, and intention
(not the preacher or the hearer’s intentions).
Our prayers also are guided:
John 14:26, John 16:13.
The Holy Spirit is a power/force.
It leads. It guides. It teaches.
Other phrases: Romans 8:14, Romans 8:13,
Galatians 5:16, Ephesians 3:16
This is a tough idea for Americans to grasp.
Heroes? Superman? Super powers? Superhero?
With Jesus the power of healing is demonstrated
In being quiet and dressed! (Mark 5:15, Luke 8:35).
Jesus doesn’t bring lightning and thunder—
Jesus calms thunder and lightning!
(Luke 8:25).
We Americans fear who/whom?
Pray that you may have power!
Amen.
