It Is Finished, Accomplished, Completed (John 19:28-37)

John 19:28-37 ( p.1073-4 / p. 1087)
Worship habits—good, but remember. . .
We look to words from Jesus’ lips.
These are words from the cross for us.
Dying words for us to live by.
Focu on Jesus’ three words,“It is finished.”
“Jesus, knowing that everything was now
accomplished. . .reminds us that Jesus knew
everythin that needed to take place—
down to the last detail.
(John 4:34, John 5:36, John 17:4)
“I thirst”? In fulfillment of Psalm 69:21?
Perhaps Jesus referred to thirsting for God?
(Psalm 42:”my soul thirst for God. . .”
Or Psalm 63?)
Jesus had prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane
if it might be possible for
the cup (crucifixion/death) to be removed.
(Matthew 26:39, Mark 14:36, Luke 22:42)
But now Jesus thirsted for that same cup?
“It is finished” = one word in Greek.
It means “accomplished” / “completed”
Some translations read it that way.
The Apostle John would like that we call Friday,
“Good Friday.”
Friday is the compleltion of Jesus’ obedience
to the Heavenly Father.
Friday marks the successful fulfillment of all
the Old Testament, perhaps, right down to the
statement, “I thirst.”
[A sword? See Luke 22:38, Isaiah 53:12, Luke 22:37]
Friday Jesus accomplished “it” on OUR behalf.
See 1 Corinthians 15:22, 1 John 2:2, Philippians 2:8.

Crucifixion and death. . .body breakdown,
fluid buildup, breathing difficult. . .
even with a foot rest.
Jesus has control.
Jesus has control of His life
See John 10:17, John 10:18.
A technicality? A point of theology!
Jesus was not killed, Jesus actively died
for you and me.
Six times Jesus said, I AM GOING
TO THE FATHER (John 14:2, John 14:12,
John 14:28, John 16:10, John 16:17, John 16:28)
The way to the Father is through the cross—
the obedience, the fulfillment.
Because Jesus went to the Father,
Jesus will take us also to our heavenly home
(John 14:2).
The resurrection only demonstrates to US
that death has been overcome for you and
for me because of Jesus’ obedience in everything
the Heavenly Father called him to do.
(Acts 2:24, Romans 5:17, Romans 6:5, Romans 6:9,
2 Timothy 1:10) Amen.
