Jesus and the Word (Luke 16:19-31)
Gary McManus, 09/01/2013Part of the God's Word is Life series, preached at a Sunday Morning service
Basics reminder: Pastor is Minister of the Word
of God. [And not the only one.]
Galatians 2:20; and see Galatians 6:15
We, DCC, are making decisions based on God’s
Word—the Bible.
Ever heard of or seen the essay, “One Solitary Life”?
It was an essay adapted from a sermon by
Dr James Allan Francis in “The Real Jesus and
Other Sermons” © 1926 by the Judson Press of
Philadelphia (pp 123-124 titled “Arise Sir Knight”)
Jesus never wrote a book.
The Bible is written ABOUT Jesus—the whole Bible. I can’t quote Jesus saying “Read your Bibles”
Jesus knew the Bible. Jesus quoted the Bible.
Jesus expected others to read their Bibles.
[See Mark 12:24, Matthew 22:29, Luke 10:25-26]
Jesus dealt with the devil Himself by quoting
scripture. . .”It Is WRITTEN!”
(In Luke chapter 4 (vss 4,8,12)
Jesus quotes Deuteronomy 8:3, 6:13 and 6:16.)
Jesus said, ”Have you not read. . .?” (Matthew 22:31, Mark 12:26)
A rich man and Lazarus. Jesus did not give a name to the rich man but tradition has named him Dives.
“If I Were a Rich Man” from the musical,
Fiddler on the Roof.
Many have thought and still think that they will
bless and share AFTER they have themselves
been blessed. (or promoted or enriched)
Jesus said that it doesn’t work that way.
(Matthew 19:24, Mark 10:24)
See also Luke 12:13-21.
The rich man in Jesus’ story was very rich:
“He FEASTED sumptuously EVERY DAY.”
He kept it up while a poor beggar was at his door.
Is this a reversal of fortunes story? NO!
The one who ignored the beggar now begs
(verse 24 and especially verse 27)
Verse 27, the rich man even says. . .I BEG you.
The rich man wants to warn his brothers.
The answer is given: let them listen to the words of
Moses and the prophets in the Bible.
The rich man protests that it isn’t enough.
The point of Jesus’ story: God’s Word contains
the plan of salvation. God’s Word IS sufficient.
God’s plan of salvation is in and through Jesus Christ. Moses, (the books of Moses) and the prophets POINT toward Jesus.
The story of the six brothers?
The rich man had a plan.
There is ALREADY a plan to help the five brothers:
God’s Word!
Jesus taught, “ask, seek, knock”
(Matthew 7:7-8, Luke 11:9-10)
We can ask, seek and knock at God’s Word.
