What Are You Expecting (Luke 2:25-35)

Luke 2:21-35 (p. 1015 / p.1027)
Jesus’ Birthday: Everyone Prepare
The Old Testament clearly contains
expectations of a Messiah (anointed one).
But what would Messiah look like?
Maybe, not what you think.
(See 1 Samuel 16:6-7)
Simeon (Luke 2:21-35) only knew
following that prompting.
Christians forget that not even people
in Jesus’ day were certain that Jesus
WAS the Messiah.
Even John the Baptizer (compare John 1:29
with Luke 7:20)
Jesus was put on trial in a religious court
for CLAIMING to be the Messiah.
(Mark 14:61)
Two things to know:
1. Jesus fulfilled many Old Testament prophecies.
(See separate sheet)
2. Jesus had to TEACH his disciples where Jesus
is mentioned in the Old Testament.
( Luke 24:27, Luke 18:31, Luke 24:25, Luke 24:44)
Peter saw Jesus as Messiah because of the
Holy Spirit,Matthew 16:17.
How might people have MIS-
understood the prophecies?
Isaiah 9:6. . .Prince of Peace. . .
a prince suggests a political leader.
But what kind of peace? (Colossians 1:19)
Jesus saw Himself and the Messiah as
a servant, not a political leader (John 18:36).
(See Zechariah 9:9-10)
[Also Psalm 72:7, Zechariah 8:12.]
Another misunderstanding?
Malachi 3:1
A messenger of the covenant.
Moses? NO.
Jesus is giving us a new covenant
(Jeremiah 31:31, Luke 22:20, 1 Corinthians 11:25).
See Elihah’s experience, 1 Kings 19:12.
The Messiah was coming as a servant:
Isaiah 61:1,2 (see Septuagint); Isaiah 58:6
We celebrate the birth of the savior.
God MAKES GOOD ON HIS PROMISES.
Jeremiah 31
Amen.
