More Truth About Thanksgiving
From last week’s message:
The “pilgrims”were serious Bible people.
pilgrims = saints = Separatists
Anyone meeting together for Bible reading, discussion,
or worship outside of the state church risked arrest,
imprisonment, fines, and possible torture.
The Pilgrims eventually left for America.
So who or what were Puritans?
Good question.
It was an insult word actually. The Puritans
would have preferred the word “godly.”
(1 Timothy 6, Titus 2, etc.)
[Warning here: technical theological fact—
Puritans were only different from the Pilgrims
because Puritans wanted to reform the church
from within the church. The Pilgrims gave
that up and left. From there they parted ways
in what we would consider “small” ways. ]
So. . .Puritan. . .but why does the word
PURITANICAL sound bad?
Puritanical is supposedly marked by plainness
or strictness.
Moderns want pure food but not pure lives.
Make sense?
An honest view would say that the Puritans
were just concerned for the public’s health
and well-being. Puritans were also concerned
for your soul.
Moderns don’t want other people being
concerned for their soul.
But the Good News is that God cares
about our souls. That is why Jesus came.
That is why we celebrate Christmas.
Our modern criticism of Puritans is completely
unfair and there is another example;
Native Americans.
The self-righteous politically correct police
come out very quickly!
Our culture is not going to give the
Christian faith any consideration.
We MUST TELL our own story. . .
of a Bible believing Christian
community:
--persecuted
--imprisoned
--robbed
--hunted, meeting in secret
(for freedoms we now take for granted!)
Even one politically correct author stated:
“The pilgrims’ courage in setting forth in late
fall 1620 to make their way to a new continent
is unsurpassed.”
Thanksgiving should be a celebration of what
God can do--what Bible people can do.
Thank God for followers of Jesus Christ who
gave us Thanksgiving and many more reasons
to be thankful this year. Amen.
