The Pilgrims Were Bible People
2 Corinthians 6:14-18
The Word of God (the Bible) and the first Thanksgiving.

The “pilgrims”were serious Bible people.
pilgrims = saints = Separatists
“pilgrim”: KJV only; Hebrews 11:13, 1 Peter 2:11
The politics of England in the 1600s:
King = Head of the Church, only one, usually
referred to as The Church of England
“hierarchical”: power from the top down starting
with the King who appointed church officials
So when you say that anyone can read and discuss
the Bible RATHER than the state appointed leaders,
that is sedition.
Pastor Richard Clyfton led others like William
Brewster who would later be Pastor to the
Plymoth Colony.
King James I response: “I shall make these people
conform or I will run them out of the country or
I will do worse to them.”
Anyone meeting together for Bible reading, discussion,
or worship outside of the state church risked arrest,
imprisonment, fines, and possible torture.
The Separatists left for the Netherlands (and that wasn’t easy,
either).
Long story short: they couldn’t stay in the Netherlands.
They decided to head to America.
(We often shorten the story of the voyage. But there
were originally two ships (including the Speedwell)
but it was taking on water and had to turn back.
Those pilgrims never made it to America.
The Mayflower and her passengers made it.
The Mayflower Compact.
They risked EVERYTHING for the Bible:
to read it and to live by it.
