Gary McManus, 11/06/2016Part of the DCC Basics series, preached at a Sunday Morning service
November 6, 2016 1 Timothy 2:1-7
(p. 1174 / p. 1193)
Two previous points
1.Prayer is the fuel line of any church.
2. Do anything without God , it will fail.
(Psalm 127:2)
1 Timothy 2:1: :I urge you. . .”
Or, “I exhort”
Or, “I urge, therefore, of first importance. . .”
Why does the Apostle have to be so
forceful about prayer to the people.
There may be a hint in 3:1-7.
PRAYER has something to do with
LOVE, GOOD CONSCINCE,
AND SINCERE FAITH. Amen!
Many of us have a resistance to prayer.
No time to pray?
Too Busy Not to Pray, Bill Hybels
Fake wanting to pray and praying
and some day you will automatically
want to pray.
Start simple.
“Seek first the Kingdom of God”
(Matthew 6:33)
Prayer is a key to seeking the
Kingdom of God.
Jesus was a person of prayer.
(Luke 3:21, Matthew 26:36, Mark 1:35,
Luke 5:16, Luke 6:12, Luke 9:18,
Luke 9:28, Luke 11:1)
(See Revelation 3:20)
In any conversation, we must speak
and we must listen.
Speak naturally, openly, honestly.
(Proverbs 23:15, Isaiah 29:13, Jeremiah 17:9).
Listen for the Lord’s response.
-- just be quiet. . .
--feel your heart. . .
--a thought crosses your mind
—maybe a person
--Is some action suggested?
--Listen to God through Bible reading
and devotional material.
--Watch for the Lord throughout the day.
—Listen for the Lord in OTHERS’ WORDS
or in some event that takes place.
A prayer book for dummies?
READ the Psalms for prayers.
I have suggested writing down your prayers.
Write down the Lord’s ANSWERS to your prayer.
Does the Lord answer prayer? Always.
.AND the answer is not always what we
want or think we need. An answer can be unexpected,
even scary.
God CAN’T be rushed.
“Don’t wait until there is nothing
left to do but pray. Pray first.” -L. Beebe
“The devil is not terribly frightened of our
human efforts and credentials.
But the devil trembles when God’s
people go to prayer.” –Jim Cymbala
“Those who know their way to God
will be able to find Him in the dark.” -L. Beebe
AMEN.
