God is at Work (Luke 6:46-49)
Gary McManus, 08/28/2016Part of the Jesus Came to Restore series, preached at a Sunday Morning service
A week of disasters, near and far.
Today we discuss natural disasters and
our God, our faith and about OUR behavior.
God doesn’t cause disaster. Sometimes that
is referred to as sub-Christian theology.
It can be argued that God causes disaster
but it isn’t a very solid claim.
Our faith seeks understanding.
Jesus said it rains on everyone—good people
and bad people. . .everyone’s crops get the rain.
There is sin in the world (Genesis 3).
Our sin affects the world. (See Hosea 4:3)
Our insistence to live where disasters happen
and can be predicted to happen puts a bit more
blame on ourselves when disaster strikes.
To not prepare for disasters which are predicted
puts more of the blame on us.
Still they are NATURAL disasters.
Even Jesus’ analogy to following his word has
within it the understanding that the wise person
prepares for disaster. (Luke 6:49)
What is God doing about it?
See Luke 3:18-19, Jesus words from Isaiah 61.
God is redeeming.
See Romans 8:28.
The emphasis on this translation is GOD!
Four things to remember when disaster strikes.
1. Someday there will be no natural disasters
on the earth. (Isaiah 65:17, Isaiah 66:22,
2 Peter 3:13, Revelation 21:1)
2. Jesus taught that natural disasters are an
opportunity to repent. (Luke 13:4-5)
3. Our God is redeeming.
The words “redeem” and “redemption” are
in the New Testament 18 times.
(See Titus 2:14)
God RIGHT NOW is working for GOOD.
4.Remember the compassion of the new
life in Christ. (Titus 2:15, Colossians 3:12,
Philippians 2:1-2)
. . .And YOU ARE, DCC!
Praise the Lord. Amen
