Today, a film based on a book that tells
a true life happening for the Beam Family.
Anna Beam became ill at the age of four.
Surgery was recommended later. The surgery
would not cure Anna but only help her body
deal with the illness:
--pseudo-obstruction motility disorder (rare) AND
--antral hypomotility disorder
All the doctors say is this:
“There is no cure.”
Anna had hospitalizations and eight medications.
One other medication had been taken off the
market because of side-affects. A doctor in
Boston was a specialist in Anna’s illness.
He could prescribe this medication.
It took months to get an appointment.
The medication would not cure Anna but
only help manage her symptoms.
Christy and Anna made twenty trips to Boston
from Texas. They went about every 4 to six weeks.
The Beam family were church goers. Both Christy,
husband Kevin and even their parents had strong
church backgrounds.
Christy Beam became clinically depressed.
Christy isn’t sure why the depression and
anxiety happened to her but concluded that
perhaps it prepared her for Anna’s illness.
Church people often say what THEY think the
Bible says. They say,
“If your faith is strong enough, she’ll be healed.”
The Bible doesn’t say that.
Pastor will remind you exactly what Jesus DOES say.
Christy Beam: “If I’ve heard that once, I’ve heard
it a thousand times. When someone says that to you,
they’re not asking you to put faith in the power of
God; they’re asking you to put faith in the power
of your own faith. (They are saying God’s power
is dependent on you. The Bible doesn’t say that.
Healing comes from God, not from your faith.)
Have faith in God; don’t have faith in the power
of your faith. Have faith in God.
(See John 9, esp. John 9:11)
What happened to Anna Beam? Two things—
maybe we should say three things.
1.Anna fell.
2. Anna says she went to heaven.
3. Anna was healed.
The Doctors know that they did
not cure Anna and they discouraged
the Beams from using the word “cure”.
Anna was healed.
Kevin Beam: “We’ve been where you
are. . .a lot of pain. Times can be challenging
and very rough. . .The thing I have found is
that the faithfulness of God has been what I
can count on and rest assured upon.
The Beam Family did not have a crisis of faith.
The Beam Family did not need to have more faith.
But the Beam Family did HAVE FAITH in God
and in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Jesus turned to Jairus and said, “Don’t be afraid;
just believe, and she will be healed.” Amen
