Forgiveness, Yours and Theirs
Romans 12:1-2, 17-21
Forgiveness: God’s forgiveness of us
and our forgiveness of others.
Jesus is our forgiveness:
Colossians 1:11, 13-14, 1 John 1:7-9.
Also 1 John 2:1-2, 1 John 4:9-10
Jesus did forgiveness by example.
Jesus wanted us to forgive.
(Matthew 18:21-22)
Granted, forgiveness is not fair.
And neither are we fair if we get our way.
(See Genesis 4:23-24, Exodus 21:26)
The rule of an eye for an eye and a tooth
for a tooth is a limiting teaching.
That teaching puts limits on the punishment.
Vengeance is God’s:
Proverbs 11:31, Isaiah 53:5,
God is punishing still.
The cross does not REMOVE God's justice,
the cross answers God's justice.
Matthew 16:27
We receive eternal abundant life AND
there are rewards.
For those who do not receive Jesus as
punishment for their sins,
there will be punishment.
One person in the Bible talks about hell
more than any other person in the Bible:
Jesus.
Rewards are the Lord ‘s to give
Punishment or vengeance is also the Lord’s to give.
See Isaiah 40:10, Luke 21:22
Thessalonians 1:8
2 Thessalonians 1:8 (NIV)
“He will punish those who do not know God
and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.”
The Lord is bringing the reward AND the recompense. . .
Put God in charge of the just desserts for your offender.
Forgiveness = a happy life?
