Gary McManus, 02/14/2016Part of the Mercy series, preached at a Sunday Morning service
Matthew 15:21-28 The Faith of a Canaanite Woman
-- a Canaanite woman!
The prophets condemned (Isaiah 23, Amos 1:9).
. . .those not expected to respond to God
(Matthew 11:21-22)
Safety in Tyre and Sidon? (Matthew 14:1-12)
More than once Jesus had said,
“my time has not yet come.”(John 7:8; but when
it is closer to the time of his arrest, Jesus says,
“My time is near.” (Matthew 26:18))
CRYING OUT. . .
“Lord, / Son of David, = Messiah
. . .have mercy on me!
[Are there any parallels to prayer?
Our prayers? ]
Is Jesus rude to the woman?
(Matthew 10:6)
the children = the children of Israel
the dogs = everyone else Gentiles
Jesus NEVER misses a teaching moment.
So what WAS the woman’s motivation(s)?
Is she faking her sincerity to get a healing?
Jesus hears the woman state her faith. . .
The woman’s answer is basically,
“But, Lord, you are God.”
The woman asked for mercy.
How can we understand mercy?
. . .a Pastor Gary real life story. . .
WHO is going to pay for this?
Nevermind? That is mercy!
Jesus tells several stories about mercy.
When there is no penalty and there is NO
repayment of a what is owed. . .that is mercy.
Grace or mercy. . .prodigal son
(Luke 15:11-32)
No penalty = mercy
New life / new path = grace
You and I are shown grace from God.
God calls upon US to be merciful (Luke 6:36).
Why might we be merciful? Jesus tells us. . .
because God has been merciful to us.
Lord have mercy on us. Amen.
