Christmas, Luke, and the Prophets (Luke 1:39-56)
Gary McManus, 12/13/2015Part of the Christmas series, preached at a Sunday Morning service
Third Sunday in Advent
December 13, 2015 Luke 1:39-56
This season we talk about prophecy.
Some 300 prophecies of the Old Testament
were fulfilled in Jesus. A dozen Old
Testament prophecies were fulfilled JUST
in Jesus’ being born.
Our God has a plan. God has a plan for YOU.
God’s plan for the world and God’s plan for
individuals came together (and still comes
together) in the birth of Jesus.
Joseph is essential part of God’s plan.
Joseph fulfills the prophecy—not genetically
but genealogically. (Matthew 1:1)
God’s plan to save ALL of humanity includes
a plan for ONE person, Joseph of Nazareth.
We should consider this for ourselves.
Luke and Matthew contain two different reports
of Jesus’ birth.
Matthew quotes the Old Testament prophets
concerning Jesus’ birth: Isaiah, Micah,
Hosea and Jeremiah.
In Luke’s Gospel book. . .NO Old Testament
quotations.
Let’s notice where Luke is sure to mention
or ALLUDE to the Old Testament.
But Jesus states it plainly: Luke 4:16, Luke 24:25,
Luke 24:27, Luke 24:44, and the Apostles in
Acts (Acts 3:18).
Luke knows. . .Luke wants YOU to know.
God’s plan, God’s promises, are BEING fulfilled.
Present tense!
Mary’s Song= Magnificat (Latin)
In just these NINE verses, there are TEN books
of the Old Testament referred to and in
those references. . .SIX different Psalms.
Mary clearly states that God remembers!
Vs. 40-41: Mary’s low estate?
Do you believe the rich get richer?
DO you believe the powerful get more powerful?
Not in God’s eyes they don’t!
Our souls can proclaim the greatness of the Lord.
Praise the Lord! Amen.
